Projects
The first exciting project for 2016 is the construction of a banana circle!
This very exciting task will be a part of the first working bee of the year, on Saturday March 5th. 2016
Bunnings Waurn Ponds have very generously donated three banana plants for us to be able to do this:
-
Dwarf Cavendish
-
Lady Finger
-
Goldfinger
Banana's are 'gross feeders' and will need a 1 metre deep, compost pit in the centre of the circle that we will add to constantly. Bananas thrive on nutrients from the decaying organic matter in the central hole.
They will also need regular watering and the compost pit is ideal for grey water!
One of the challenges of growing bananas in our 'cool temperate climate', is of course .. our climate!
The three bananas that we have are 'cool cultivars' - intended for cooler climates.
Banana's will need protection once the temperature drops below 10 degrees; we will mulch heavily most of the way up the plant with peastraw and wrap them with old shade cloth (saved from hot house renovation) so they can survive through winter.

Sweet Potatoes
The next stage of the banana circle will begin in July/August; when we will allow a sweet potato to shrivel and send out shoots (slips).
We will aim for nine slips; each will be put in a jar of water to develop roots and then planted in potting mix (we will make the potting mix) and around October, we will plant the seedlings in between each banana!
